How We Select Our Ingredients:
We select each of our ingredients to produce best-in-class products while supporting industries and initiatives that are grounded in social and environmental responsibility. Our criteria for ingredients include:
Contributes to a best-in-class product.
We’ve established quality metrics for each of our product categories, and each ingredient must make a meaningful contribution to these metrics.
Product quality metrics for our hair care products include lather, cleansing, ease of rinsing, conditioning, feel of wet hair, protection, detangling and compatibility, body, static reduction, shine, and aroma. Quality metrics for soap include cleansing, skin feel and conditioning, lather, hardness, aroma, and stability of the bar.
Is not a known source of environmental or social conflict.
One Earth Body care does not use palm oil or tallow (animal fat) because of the massive deforestation and destruction of human and ecological communities involved in producing these materials. We avoid palm oil derivatives wherever possible.We strive to stay current on scientific and ecological knowledge about raw ingredients and will continue to refine our formulas according to sound science and client experience.
Is organic or Fair-Trade certified if available.
We believe that organic and Fair Trade practices are important starting points in the quest to develop regenerative agriculture. Organic agriculture is significantly more planet friendly than methods using herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. Fair Trade works to provide a living wage and empowerment to people working in agricultural sectors, generally in poorer countries. Fair Trade certification also requires producers to implement sustainable environmental standards.
Our coconut oil and cocoa butter are certified organic and Fair-Trade. Our olive oil and some of our essential oils are certified organic. Due to sourcing issues, not all of our products are 100% organic or Fair Trade yet. These products include our rice bran oil, mango butter, and some of our essential oils.
How We Package Our Products:
Packaging should not just protect the product, it should protect the health of the planet as well. Here are our criteria for packaging:
Biodegradable.
One Earth Body Care believes packaging should be biodegrade and return to the earth to support life rather than create pollution. Many of our products are packaged in recycled paper boxes and cellulose bags which can be composted after the product is used. We also use some glass and tin, which are reusable and recyclable.
Made from recycled material.
We seek out paper with the highest available content of post-consumer waste and products that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Our shampoo bar, conditioner bar and soap boxes are made from unbleached, 100% post-consumer recycled paperboard.
